Painter, born in Rathdrum, County Wicklow and educated at Ranelagh School, Athlone, County Westmeath, and Mountjoy School. He embarked on a business career with a printing firm in Dundalk and became active in An Óige, (the Irish Youth Hostelling organisation) serving as national honorary treasurer and national honorary secretary. In 1963 he gave up his business career to become a full-time painter. As his reputation grew he held solo exhibitions in France, Sweden, Germany, and Spain, as well as in Ireland.

King was a founder member of the Contemporary Irish Art Society, a member of Aosdána and of ROSC which means 'poetry of vision' in Gaelic. He was generous in his support of younger artists and acted as an assessor for final-year students in colleges of art throughout the country. He received an award of $4,000 from the Irish-American Cultural Institute in 1977. He exhibited with the David Hendriks Gallery and Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin and subsequently with the Oliver Dowling in Dublin. King's work is in the collection of the Crawford Art Gallery, IMMA, Dublin, Leeds University Collection, ACI, ACNI, Trinity College, Dublin and the Tate Gallery. He died suddenly in hospital in Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin.
